Ocean Resort Casino Opening is a Week Away!
Shortly after Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City announced its June 28 opening date, Ocean Resort Casino made it known that it, too, would be opening on June 28. However, anyone who has followed the fascinating but sad saga of the wannabe casino that went from TEN to 0 knows that promises mean zilch without a license. Now, finally, any uncertainty that Ocean Resort Casino would in fact open on June 28 has been laid to rest.
On Thursday, June 21, exactly one week prior to the casino’s scheduled opening date, the Casino Control Commission granted Ocean Resort Casino a license.
License is Conditional and Contingent on Meeting Specific Requirements
In order to get this license, Ocean Resort Casino, just like all of its predecessors in Atlantic City, had to demonstrate to the Commission’s satisfaction not only sufficient financial resources, but also sound moral character, honesty, and integrity.
The Commission spent two days listening to and deliberating on testimony from owner Bruce Deifik, Chief Financial Officer Alan Greenstein, and other top executives before reaching its decision to approve the new casino resort. The fact that Ocean Resort Casino was able to meet the Commission’s very high standards is reassuring news to all who intend to frequent the resort and play there.
Even so, the license was issued with a long list of conditions from state regulators at the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE). The primary area of concern was the company’s financial stability. Even though Deifik laid out $200 million to purchase the property and nearly $50 million more to renovate it, given the dismal failure of the Revel, the Commission’s concerns are understandable. However, testimony by top executives at the resort helped put the Commission’s fears to rest and played a key role in Ocean Resort Casino ultimately being approved to open.
What Convinced the Commission that Ocean Resort Casino Deserved a License
Greenstein testified that the resort expects to gain about 10.5 percent of the Atlantic City market during its first year and 12 percent by 2021. He also predicted that during its first year of operation, Ocean Resort Casino will take in $292 million in gambling revenue and $127 million in non-gaming revenue.
CEO Frank Leone spoke about the resort’s marketing strategy. He assured the Commission that the frequent complaints guests at the Revel made about that facility, like the ban on smoking and minimum two night stay for overnight guests, have been addressed and corrected. He promised “an unwavering commitment to exceeding guests’ expectations.”
Deifik echoed those sentiments and mentioned the partnership with Hyatt Hotels and unique amenities that the resort will offer like free parking and the largest indoor TopGolf Swing Suite in North America. He predicted that when people see what Ocean Resort Casino has to offer, it will “surprise the world.”
What to Expect at Ocean Resort Casino on June 28
Ocean Resort Casino insists it will be fully ready to open on June 28. However, realistically, with only a few days remaining until the public gets to be the judge of that, the resort is facing an enormous challenge. I can predict with reasonable certainty that whatever the people in charge may say to the contrary, come June 28, Ocean Resort Casino will still be a work in progress. Here is what you can expect if you visit June 28.
The Casino Floor
Ocean Resort Casino will open its doors on June 28 at 1 p.m., exactly one hour after Hard Rock.
Hopefully, everything will go smoothly at both casinos. However, this much is certain. At Ocean Resort, not only on June 28, but the entire opening weekend, the entire 130,000 square-foot casino floor offering nearly 2,000 slot machines, more than 100 table games, and eight poker tables will be packed.
The resort has a total of 1,300 rooms. However, nearly half of them aren’t ready yet. If you want to stay overnight opening weekend and don’t have a reservation yet, forget it.
Ocean Resort Casino will be the second Atlantic City casino to offer sports betting. In fact, you will be able to place sports bets there on June 28. The only other place in town where you can currently bet legally on sports is the Borgata Race & Sports Book, which has been up and running since Thursday, June 14.
Most of the other Atlantic City casinos are also planning to open sports books, but not until mid-July at the earliest. Ocean Resort Casino, had indicated, even before the historic Supreme Court ruling making legal sports betting in New Jersey possible, that offering first class sports betting facility on the premises would be a priority. Ocean Resort Casino is to be applauded for its foresight and quickness to offer this option from the get-go.
Ocean Resort has partnered with sports betting giant William Hill to build a 7,500 square-foot state-of-the-art sports book smack in the middle of the casino. However, the new facility is not expected to be completed for another six weeks. In the meantime, sports betting will be offered at Ocean Resort Casino starting June 28 at a temporary location.
Ocean Resort has applied for an Internet gaming license with GAN. Assuming that the application is approved, the site is expected to be up and running on July 1. Stay tuned for updated information here, including everything you need to know to access upcoming Ocean Resort Online Casino promotions and bonuses.
If You Go on June 28–
Back in May, 1978 when Resorts opened as the only game in town, the lines to get in were several blocks long. Hopefully, there won’t be a repeat scenario this time, but with two new casinos opening the same day within an hour of each other, it’s possible. Then once you get in, don’t be surprised if there are long lines for everything.
Leave home early, as the traffic will be horrendous, wear comfortable shoes, and bring along water and snacks to tide you over. You will probably want to eat one of the many fine restaurants at Ocean Resort Casino, but there could be long lines to get into the eatery of your choice. So don’t arrive ravenous, expecting to eat immediately. By the way, Ocean Resort Casino will have a buffet, but it is not slated to open until winter.
The resort will have no shortage of top entertainment for opening weekend, including comedian and Shazam host Jamie Foxx, rapper Jermaine Dupri, and DJs Diplo and Kaskade.
